NCAA Division I Bracket

St Louis University Billikens - 1
Drake Bulldogs - 0
Post-Dispatch - With St. Louis University’s NCAA soccer tournament game appearing headed for penalty kicks, the Billikens scored in the closing seconds for a dramatic 1-0 win over Drake at freezing Hermann Stadium.

With the clock running out in the second overtime, defender Tim Ream played a long ball out of the back. Seldom-seen reserve forward Charles Bryce, who was only in the game because SLU leading scorer Kyle Patterson had broken his arm two minutes into the game, chased after it. He was fouled by goalie Michael Drozd, who ran out of his box to try to get the ball.

He and Bryce got to the ball at the same time and Drozd caught Bryce with a high boot. The referee stopped the clock with 6.3 seconds to play and gave SLU a free kick just outside the penalty box. Calum Angus took the free kick and put the ball into the box, where it dipped in front of Drozd. Kyle Hayes got his foot on the ball from just outside the goal line and put it into the roof of the net for the winner.

SLU, which plays a first-round game tonight against Drake at Hermann Stadium at 7 p.m., hasn’t won an NCAA match since 2003. No one on the current team has won a tournament game wearing a SLU uniform.

The winner faces Indiana on Tuesday.

Northwestern Wildcats - 1 (PK’s)
Loyola (Illinois) - 0
Wildcats win in PK’s, 4-1

The winner faces Notre Dame on Tuesday.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane - 1
UMKC Kangaroos - 0
Tulsa World - The chants of “Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose” were let out from the 350 or so freezing University of Tulsa soccer fans and cut through the cold, crisp air Friday night.

It was a chant the Golden Hurricane soccer supporters had been waiting all night to let loose. Jose Parada finally converted one of the numerous TU scoring chances with just over 10 minutes remaining to give fifth-ranked TU a 1-0 victory over UMKC in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.

The winner faces Creighton on Tuesday.

Ryan Squires (in white) watches his game-winning goal headed for the net

Class 3 Semifinal
DeSmet Spartans - 1
Glendale Falcons - 2 (2nd OT)
Ryan Squires heads Devon Newport’s corner kick into the net in the 105th minute for the OT winner. The Falcon’s fought back from a 1-0 deficit in the first half, when they gave up a goal in the 31st on a heads up play by the DeSmet goal scorer. The Spartan’s also had a shot go off the crossbar and walked into the locker rooms at halftime feeling very confident. That as despite the fact that the Falcon’s had already begun to put their imprint on the game, moving the ball very well against the Spartan’s defense.

Devon Newport knotted the game in the 52nd minute on a direct kick from approximately 25 yards. The ball somehow went over the wall and slipped into the near post just underneath a diving attempt to stop it by the DeSmet goal keeper. The Falcon’s had begun their recovery prior to the goal but I believe that cemented the faith they had in the outcome. The Spartan’s are a very talented team, and will rue the opportunities lost, including another shot off the crossbar in the second half. But this was the Falcon’s game and the longer it went, the more likely it seemed that the Falcon’s would achieve the historic win. Historic for it sets up the first Class 3 Final without a St Louis team represented, and also for putting a Springfield large school team into the Final for the first time.

I’ve got over 200 photos to edit, it will have to wait for tomorrow since I have Catholic’s 10 am game to cover before the Falcon’s game at 7:00 pm tomorrow. This is going to take some time to digest and appreciate but I can tell you I’ve got four former players looking over my shoulder and enjoying the early peeks and marveling at the quality of play shown tonight. It was a well-deserved win for the Falcon’s against a quality opponent.

- “I thought we handled ourselves pretty well; it was a good, competitive game,” Pembroke Hill Coach Pritchett said. “We’re young in some key spots, and St. Dominic is a good, solid team. We saw today why they’ve been ranked No. 1 in the state most of the season.”

Ranked No. 1 among Post-Dispatch small schools and in the state poll, St. Dominic is looking for its second state title in boys soccer. The Crusaders won the Class 2 championship in 2004. Helias is ranked sixth in Class 2.

MO HS Final 4: Burroughs Bombers vs Springfield Catholic, Class 1

    Class 1 Semifinal

Springfield Catholic - 1
John Burroughs - 2
The game this afternoon was slow to develop, as both teams came out unwilling to make a mistake in early goings. Catholic in particular showed the effects of their first visit to the Final 4 as their first touch on the ball was below their own standards. Despite that fact, it was the Irish who had the first opportunity in the box, from a set piece following a foul in front of the Burrough’s bench. Neither team had a real opportunity in the first half although Burrough’s controlled play.

The Irish broke through in the 47th minute when David Bailey controlled a high ball at the top of the circle. His simple ball to Justin Bowenschulte allowed Justin to hammer a shot from 21 yards out that found the side netting at the far post. The Irish awoke the sleeping giant with that goal, opening up the game. Moving #5 Martin up from his defensive position, the Bomber’s applied the experience that had brought them this far, with Martin taking a lead role.

The game-tying goal was scored in the 58th, when Martin was able to make a run to the endline on the right side. His cross into the six-yard box was deflected into the net off of a Catholic defender, somehow finding space just inside the upright. The game-winner came in the 69th, as Martin stepped in to put a ball into the net with a shot off the outside of his right foot, following a pair of opportunities on a corner kick that Catholic was unable to clear.

Catholic will face St Pius (KC) at 10am on Saturday while the Bombers move onto the Title game against Vince Drake and his Trinity squad at noon, as the North side and South side square off once again for bragging rights. Burroughs (17-10-1) is in the midst of chasing a historic end to its season. The Bombers have never won a state championship despite participating in two previous title games (2003, 2006).

    Class 1 Semifinal

Trinity Catholic - 3
St. Pius X (KC) - 1
Hat trick by Joe Pieper (thanks Frisco!)
Post-Dispatch - After a Pieper goal put Trinity up 1-0 in the first half, St. Pius (22-4) evened the score with a Conor Parrish goal six minutes into the second half. Pieper responded with his second goal midway through the half, tapping the ball past St. Pius goalkeeper Zach Guthier after receiving an entry pass from Kevin Murphy. Pieper put the game away six minutes later. Pieper took a pass from Corey Kinnison at midfield, split the St. Pius defense and put a shot between Guthier’s legs to make it 3-1.

Trinity advances to face Burroughs in the Title game. It will be the teams’ third consecutive postseason meeting. Burroughs also beat Trinity in the district final the previous two years, but with a district reshuffling the two will meet this time with a state title on the line.

Final 4 Resources and Directions

20-Nov-08

It’s almost time to hit the road to Fenton and the AB Soccer Complex for the Final Four this weekend. Here are a few tips on food, coffee and parking for those who may not be familiar with the area.

First and foremost, give yourself plenty of time. There’s a couple of reasons for this. These events go by fast and you’re going to want to enjoy it. Why try and rush. Experience it all.

The other reason is because parking and other resources are in short supply in Fenton. It has taken 30 minutes to get out of the parking lot following the Class 1 & 2 games in the past, and the crowds then are small compared to what we can expect this weekend. This is a great experience as all of St Louis comes out to see the best soccer available this season.

For that reason, I’d suggest getting there as early as possible and take in some of the earlier games. Do some scouting, see some quality players and get a parking spot that may actually be in the complex. If you want a commemorative t-shirt, do it early. They usually run out, except for the smallest size. And pack as if you are headed for the North fields at Lake Country. Based in a valley along a river, it can get quite a bit colder then the general forecast might indicate.

Directions: From Springfield, you are looking for exit 274B, Mraz Lane. You’ll go under the overpass and be able to pull onto the outer road. Follow it down to the end where it will bend to the right and end at Rudder Road. Turn left and follow it around to where it ends at Yarnell Road. Turn left and go under I-44 and follow the road around to the Soccer Complex. If you miss the exit, the next best bet is continue on to exit 277B (Lindbergh). You’ll be able to do a U-turn safely and easily and staying in the entrance lane will take you directly to the Soccer Park exit for West-bound traffic on I-44.

Parking is $2 or $3 so bring singles. If you see cars parked along the road on Rudder, that means the lot is already full. I’d pull a U-turn and find a good spot on the side of the road that you’ll be able to get out of quickly then afterwards. I’ve never seen anyone ticketed and the walk isn’t too bad. You have to go all the way to the parking lot entrance (no back way in) but at least they’ve moved the ticket booths closer to that end now and you’ll be in the complex.

Google Map

The closest source of espresso and coffee I found, besides the fast food joints including the formerly closest-to-Springfield Krispy Kreme, is along Rudder Road after you get off I-44. There’s a coffee shack, hours appear to be morning only however. There is a Starbuck’s at Hwy 141 & I-44, which is one exit West of the one you take for the Soccer Park. The address is 922 South Meramec Station Rd, the phone is 636-825-0369.

I’d also recommend the Mexican Restaurant that shares a parking lot with the coffee shack, La Plaza, when you exit at Mraz Road. The food is fresh and tasty and the margarita’s earned a B (Maria’s Traditionals are A’s).

Another place I haven’t tried yet but have heard good things about is JJ Twig’s Pizza. Located North of the AB Soccer Complex, hop on I-44 East, go North on I-270 and then Exit Dougherty Ferry (first intersection North of I-44) and go west to Big Bend. Here’s the link - http://www.jjtwigsstl.com/

If you have more time, my suggestion would be to go a little farther East on I-44. The first exit after I-270 is Lindbergh. Exit 277B, turn left and there are several national chains including Chili’s and Texas Road House. Alternately, head North 1.25 miles to downtown Kirkwood. Before the Amtrak station is Kaldi’s (with free wireless and my espresso of choice in Missouri) as well as a Ben & Jerry’s and Bar Louie (a Chicago import you can also find at Branson Landing now). A block north of the RR tracks is Duffy’s Pizza and Amici’s Italian Restaurant, both places I’ve enjoyed several times. Alternately, turn left on Jefferson, go 1/2 a block and Mike Duffy’s Bar & Grill offers a great menu as well.

Want to do a little bit of sightseeing without downtown hassles? Consider the St Louis Soccer Hall of Fame. It’s located within the Midwest Soccer Academy at 5247 Fyler Avenue (phone 314-781-8493). The Botanical Gardens are at I-44 and Hampton, the HOF is just South of there - get off at the Jamieson exit, turn right (S) and go one block to the 4 way stop sign, then turn left onto Fyler (E) and about 7 blocks.

There you have it. Have a great time and Go Irish! Go Falcons! Go Stars!

ESPN AM1380 has broadcast the Final’s in the past. If you have a portable radio, bring it just in case.
